It starts with chickens
I found a local mobile mechanic to diagnose my car, and to my dismay, they discovered that the timing chain had broken - this is not good timing! However, I struck up a pleasant conversation with the mechanic and his wife. They graciously shared insights about our new area, recommending hidden gems to explore and dine at. We arranged for my car to be towed to their shop for repairs while I temporarily rented a vehicle to take the kids back and forth to school.
Just a quick stop
On my way back from picking up the rental car, Warren requested that I stop at the store to grab some grocery essentials, garden supplies, and a closet rod for the kid’s bedroom closet. Since it’s Sunday and most hardware stores are closed, I passed a Tractor Supply conveniently located next to Wal-Mart that happened to be open. Seeing this as a chance to tick off multiple things on the list, I decided to browse around to pick up some garden supplies and check if they had the closet rod we needed.
Chick Magnet
I passed by the chicks strolling through the store! Oh my goodness they were so cute, all fluffy and peeping away! I couldn't resist taking a picture to send to Warren, and his response was surprising - "You can get some if you want..." That simple sentence sent me into full squirrel mode - gathering supplies and scooping up 10 little chicks, completely forgetting about the other things I needed for the garden and the closet rod. The chicks were just too irresistible! They offered 3 different breeds of chickens, and since I had no prior experience in raising them, I decided to request a few of each. Figuring I'll just “wing it” and learn as I go along.
Welcome home!
We quickly set up an improvised brooder using a tote, carefully placing it inside our dog crate to ensure the safety of our chicks. While our initial plan was to keep them on the front porch, concerns about the nighttime chill led us to relocate them indoors. The crate found its perfect spot in the living room, where the chirping provided a delightful ambient sound. I feel like a farmer already!
